Javon Moore, a Minnetonka native, is eager for the 2024 NHL Draft.

This weekend in Las Vegas, the former hockey standout from Minnetonka High School, who was a finalist for Mr. Hockey, anticipates hearing his name called.

Minneapolis, Minnesota Javon Moore, a Gopher recruit, is 6-foot-3 and weighs 190 pounds, so his nickname definitely suits.

“Our coach was giving us all nicknames, and so we lined up and he gave me the nickname ‘Diesel,’ like a freight train kind of thing; kind of the diesel gas, the power,” Moore said KARE 11.

Diesel is positioned to be selected among the first Minnesotans selected at this weekend’s NHL Draft in Vegas thanks to his mix of size, talent, and speed.

“Tall, power-forward who has great skating ability, who can shoot and pass as well, and that hard-nosed forward that can forecheck and backcheck and play a 200-feet game,” Moore stated.

This season, the Mr. Hockey finalist for Minnetonka recorded 53 points (26 goals, 27 assists) in his senior year. He will play in the USHL with Sioux Falls for the upcoming season, then in 2025–2026, he will suit up for Bob Motzko and the Gophers. Moore states that hearing his name called by a squad he is quite familiar with would be his ideal situation.

In my opinion, the Minnesota Wild is my ideal team. Growing up in Minnesota, my family then owns season tickets there,” Moore remarked.

Diesel is about to fulfill a dream shared by all boys growing up in the State of Hockey, regardless of who ends up choosing Moore.

It is an honor, he acknowledged. “Every guy’s dream is to work since they were little. There are so many talented hockey players out there, so it’s an honor for it to come true for me.”
