The Philadelphia Eagles had an unforgettable game on Sunday.
In one of the most lopsided Conference Championship defeats in recent history, they thrashed the Washington Commanders, 55-23.
As they cruised to the Super Bowl for the third time in eight years, they scored eight touchdowns in total, breaking the team and combined points total records of 55 and 88 for a Championship game.
Even though there is undoubtedly love lost in the rivalry between the Eagles and Commanders, a familiar figure on the Commanders has some exciting news.
Zach Ertz Decides Whether to Retire
The tight end who won the Super Bowl in 2018 for Philadelphia, Zach Ertz, has been the subject of retirement speculations heading into the new season.
He would be 35 years old by the time the playoffs begin in January of 2025, his fourteenth season in the league.
After winning the Lombardi Trophy, playing for well over ten years in the league, earning almost $75 million, and making it to three Pro Bowls, Ertz will be a free agency in March. One would think he has nothing more to do.
But according to Ertz, who was interviewed by NBC4 Sports on Monday, the seasoned tight end will continue to play.
“I believe that simply being here with the guys, the people, and the quarterback has made it possible for me to savor each and every day.” When you’re in a difficult situation, the burden of everything is often heavy.
Therefore, it was liberating to go out there and be myself every day this year; the individuals that supported me showed me that they believed in me and trusted me to pursue my goals.
Of course, it was a lot of pleasure to play with [quarterback] Jayden [Daniels]. We’ve only been together for a year, but as a quarterback and tight end combo, I think we’re just getting started.
I just want to make it clear that I’m not retiring since I have no idea what the future may bring and I still want to play football next season. I feel refreshed and young because I had so much fun this year; at 34, this is the most games I’ve played in a season. They understand how I feel about this town, and I felt like I played decent football this year, so for me it’s just sorting everything out moving ahead.
In 2025, may Ertz rejoin the Eagles?
It appears that this interview may put a disappointing cap on the Eagles’ hopes that Ertz is preparing to return to the place where he was so successful for over 10 years.
Based on this interview, it appears like Ertz is determined to return to Washington, even though Philly could use an experienced, still-productive TE2 to complement Dallas Goedert, especially because current TE2 Grant Calcaterra will be a free agency at the end of the 2025 season.
The conclusion, which tells NBC4 that the Commanders “know how I feel about this place,” is very striking.
However, anything can happen during the offseason, and Eagles general manager Howie Roseman may still be able to find a space on the roster for the best tight end in the team’s history if Washington decides to take a different approach come March.
