Ken Rosenthal Predicts Astros Will Re-Sign Bregman
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal recently expressed confidence in the Astros’ chances of re-signing Bregman despite earlier moves that appeared to signal a departure.
“I would bet the Astros in this negotiation,” Rosenthal said on Foul Territory TV, signaling that Houston remains a strong contender to retain the two-time All-Star and 2024 Gold Glove winner.
Astros’ Changing Approach
Houston’s offseason activity initially pointed away from a Bregman reunion. The Astros traded All-Star right fielder Kyle Tucker to the Cubs in a deal that brought in third baseman Isaac Paredes, while also signing Christian Walker to solidify first base. These moves seemed to leave no room for Bregman in the infield.
However, with Bregman’s price tag reportedly dropping due to teams’ reluctance to offer a long-term deal, the Astros have re-entered the picture. The trade of closer Ryan Pressly to the Cubs freed up payroll flexibility, potentially clearing the way for Houston to pursue Bregman aggressively.
Position Adjustments and Bregman’s Value
If the Astros re-sign Bregman, they may shift their roster alignment to accommodate him. Veteran second baseman Jose Altuve has already expressed willingness to move to left field to make room for Bregman at third base, reflecting the organization’s commitment to retaining a player who has been a key figure in their success.
“For Alex, I’ll do whatever,” Altuve said at the Astros’ fan festival. “We want him to stay, so whatever I have to do for him to stay, I’m willing to do it.”

Bregman has also garnered attention from the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers, adding competition to the Astros’ efforts. In 2024, Bregman slashed .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs, showcasing his consistent offensive production alongside stellar defense at third base.
