Rasul Douglas, a cornerback, was one of the Green Bay Packers’ greatest midseason acquisitions in recent years. Douglas quickly gained popularity among Green Bay fans after being cut from the Arizona Cardinals practice squad in 2021 because to Jaire Alexander’s shoulder injury. He recorded five interceptions, including two that he recovered for touchdowns.
Many believed he would be with the Packers for a long time when he signed a contract extension with them soon after that season. But last season, Green Bay dealt him to the Buffalo Bills for a third-round selection.
Although he has performed admirably for Buffalo over the past two and a half seasons, Douglas will be eligible to sign a free agent contract this summer. Additionally, he may be of interest to one of the Packers’ fiercest rivals.
During their football game on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Green Bay Packers cornerback Rasul Douglas, 29, reacts after making a tackle on a pass play against the Detroit Lions in the first quarter. Former Green Bay Packers Cornerback Has Been Linked to the Minnesota Vikings
Douglas, who was moved to Buffalo the previous season, intercepted four passes and gave up just 51.3% of the passes that were targeted. When aiming for him, opposing quarterbacks only had a 38.6 passing rating.
He hasn’t been as productive this season. When opposing quarterbacks target him, their passing rating is 122.0, while Douglas has given up a completion rate of 72.9%. He hasn’t intercepted any passes, either.
Nevertheless, Douglas is thought to be among the top cornerbacks available this summer. The Minnesota Vikings, who could lose All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore, are reportedly among the several clubs interested in him. Recently, Mason Cameron of PFF wrote:
Despite his share of difficulties in Buffalo, Douglas had a 2024 coverage grade of 58.9. Nevertheless, given that he had 14 interceptions in the three seasons previous, his talent for producing turnovers is still evident.
Douglas offers a seasoned alternative on the outside as the Vikings search for a replacement for Stephon Gilmore. His abilities complement Brian Flores’ aggressive, blitz-heavy style, which makes him a solid contender to strengthen Minnesota’s secondary.
Jordan Love and the Packers attack would not have a great time against Douglas, even with his troubles in 2024. Hopefully, he will be enticed away by another club that is not in the NFC North.
Of course, because the Packers are anticipated to cut ties with Alexander, there is also a potential that he may rejoin them. However, Green Bay would have kept him on board if they had hoped to include him in their long-term strategies.
Gilmore is also entering free agency, but he hasn’t made up his mind on whether he wants to play in 2025 or retire from the NFL. It will be his sixth team in five years if he decides to play and registers with another team.
