Astros Reignite Talks with Alex Bregman Despite Previous Setbacks

A potential reunion between Alex Bregman and the Houston Astros may still be in the cards.

According to Chandler Rome of The Athletic, the Astros have resumed negotiations with Bregman after earlier indications suggested the two sides had parted ways.

Bregman’s Rejected Offer

Earlier this offseason, Bregman declined a six-year, $156 million contract extension from Houston. Following the rejection, the Astros made several moves to reconfigure their infield, signaling they were prepared to move forward without the two-time All-Star.

Among these moves was the acquisition of All-Star third baseman Isaac Paredes in a trade involving Kyle Tucker and the Chicago Cubs. Additionally, Houston signed first baseman Christian Walker to a three-year, $60 million deal.

A Set Infield—For Now

Currently, the Astros’ infield appears solidified, with Walker at first base, Jose Altuve at second, Jeremy Peña at shortstop, and Paredes taking over third base. This alignment seemed to close the door on Bregman’s potential return to Houston.

However, renewed talks indicate the Astros may be rethinking their strategy. If Bregman returns, the team will likely face tough decisions regarding how to realign the infield. This could include moving Altuve—one of the most consistent second basemen in the league—to an unfamiliar position, potentially a significant adjustment for the 2017 AL MVP.

Bregman’s Impact on Houston

Bregman has been a cornerstone of the Astros’ success since debuting with the team in 2016. A two-time All-Star and the 2019 runner-up for AL MVP, he’s been pivotal in Houston’s playoff runs, including their World Series victories in 2017 and 2022.

Despite turning down the initial offer, Bregman’s leadership and on-field production remain valuable assets to the team, and his potential return could bolster the Astros’ chances in the upcoming season.

What’s Next?

The renewed discussions between Bregman and the Astros signal a willingness on both sides to find common ground. However, whether they can overcome previous differences remains to be seen. If Bregman does return to Houston, the Astros will need to carefully navigate the changes to their infield alignment and ensure a seamless transition for all players involved.
