Derek Carr, the quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, has already missed a few games this season due to an injury.
Carr is anticipated to miss “several weeks” due to a “significant” fracture in his left hand, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Carr played the most of the Saints’ game against the Giants, but left the game after trying to go past a defender in the fourth quarter. On 20 of 31 passes, he finished with 219 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception.
Jake Haener, his backup, came in for him but didn’t try to pass.
After missing three games due to an oblique injury sustained against the Kansas City Chiefs on October 7, Carr returned on November 3 against the Carolina Panthers. Rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler took over as the starting quarterback in Carr’s place.
In the three games he started, Rattler, a fifth-round draft selection from South Carolina, passed for 571 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions—all of which ended in defeat. If Carr is forced to miss time, it’s uncertain if the Saints will turn to Haener or Rattler. Fresno State sophomore Haener has thrown for 177 yards and a score on 14 of 19 passes.
Carr has had a difficult season, much like New Orleans. During the Saints’ 5-8 season, the seasoned quarterback has only passed for 1,926 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions.
