Max Klesmit’s Selfless Approach Stuns Wisconsin’s Greg Gard
In an era of college sports dominated by NIL deals, Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard was navigating the uncertain landscape of player expectations when he had a conversation that left him speechless.
Gard recalled talking with each of his players about their future and NIL aspirations. When he reached Max Klesmit, he was expecting the usual discussion about financial opportunities, agent involvement, or personal decisions. Instead, Klesmit’s response floored him:
“You gave me the opportunity to wear the [Wisconsin] jersey, and that’s enough.”
Gard was so moved that he jokingly admitted, “I wanted to hug and kiss him!”
A Rare Mindset in Today’s Game
At a time when most players prioritize financial incentives, Klesmit’s dedication to playing for Wisconsin and Coach Gard over money is a refreshing anomaly. Even as an in-state player from Neenah, Wisconsin, Klesmit initially began his college career at Wofford before transferring to the Badgers. Despite today’s trend of athletes chasing the biggest NIL deals, Klesmit remains focused on his love for the game and his team.
His father, Rich Klesmit, wasn’t the least bit surprised by his son’s selfless approach:
“Do yourself a favor—if you ever have the opportunity to get to know Max, do it. You’ll be better for it.”
Gard’s Eye for Culture-Driven Players
Klesmit isn’t the only Wisconsin player to embody this commitment. Carter Gilmore is another prime example. A walk-on turned key contributor, Gilmore has remained dedicated to the Badgers through roster crunches and uncertainties, playing five seasons and providing invaluable leadership.
Klesmit’s Status for Minnesota Game in Question
Now, the focus shifts to whether Klesmit can recover in time for Wisconsin’s upcoming matchup against Minnesota. He missed the last game against Michigan State, where his defensive presence and offensive movement were sorely missed. His return could be a critical factor for the Badgers as they look to regain momentum.
