Mike Hilton, a veteran of the Cincinnati Bengals and former nickel CB for the Pittsburgh Steelers, may be searching for a new home in NFL free agency. Indeed, it seems to be moving in that direction if you look past his most recent X post from March 3.
Just before noon (EST) on Monday, Hilton posted, “New opportunities always present themselves 🙏🏾,” which attracted the attention of league media and fans.
After reading this piece, ESPN NFL expert Jeremy Fowler noted: “Free agent Mike Hilton, very good slot corner, could be on his way out of Cincinnati.”
To make place for the signing and/or extension of great wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, as well as elite pass rusher Trey Hendrickson, the AFC North opponent Bengals have been releasing players and freeing up financial space.
Cincy does not have to cut Hilton because he is an upcoming free agent, but his post suggests that the team may have already informed him that they want to take a different approach. That means that, barring a reunion with Pittsburgh, the soon-to-be 31-year-old will be searching for just his third team in nine years.

Hilton should play a considerably smaller role this time around if the Steelers decide to bring him back. Although the former 61-game participant (including playoffs) performs best in the slot, Pittsburgh does require assistance at outside cornerback. As a rookie, second-year UDFA Beanie Bishop Jr. filled that role.
With Cameron Sutton back from suspension later in 2024, Bishop’s playing time was restricted due to head coach Mike Tomlin’s preference for veterans, but it would be prudent to continue the young player’s development this year.
Nevertheless, Sutton is a free agent, and given his difficulties in 2024, it seems doubtful that he will return. In this scenario, Hilton would agree to sign on the cheap, taking Sutton’s place as Bishop’s veteran backup.
Bishop may even learn a few tips from the astute slot CB, which would help him improve his skills over time.

Speaking of Bishop, on February 23, the young defensive back was candid about being benched as a rookie.
Bishop stated on the “Big C’s NFL Preview” podcast that it was only a coaching issue.
He said, “Obviously, I felt a certain way about it too.” But I’m going to support them no matter what they think will help us win football games. For that reason, I want to be able to win and such.
Bishop finally remarked, “It was a big transition, starting and playing a lot to not playing that much.” “But I made an effort to maintain my composure, to remain level-headed, and to realize that I have to go out there and try to make plays whenever my number is called.”
Bishop played defensive snap counts of 17, 6, and 1 in three of the season’s most crucial games, from Week 17 through the NFL playoffs’ wildcard round. with the playoff matchup versus Baltimore serving as the last game.
Bishop is understandably disappointed, but going into year two, he appears to be in the correct frame of mind.
It’s acceptable to be irritated, but you must maintain composure and prioritize the team. Despite his dissatisfaction with the perplexing choices made in 2024, the 25-year-old seems to be accomplishing that.
