Despite rumors that he would stay with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Mitch Marner, a vital player, is expected to enter the free agent market. Due to Auston Matthews’ injury problems, Marner has been filling in, putting him on pace for a career-high season with 16 goals and 71 points in 56 games. Marner, who will be eligible for free agency in the summer, is in a good position to take advantage of this, and because Mikko Rantanen could be the only other big talent available, he might get a sizable payoff.
Mitch Marner may be eligible for a sizable payoff.
Rumors about Mitch Marner’s potential salary on his next deal are growing as he is close to signing an extension. An NHL veteran believes there is a slim possibility that Marner might be the highest-paid player in the league. With their own lucrative contracts, several well-known celebrities have dominated the market, but Marner’s next deal might upend them. Former NHL goalkeeper Andrew Raycroft was asked about Marner’s record-breaking contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday’s First Up show.
“Let me ask you this: the percentage chance that Mitch Marner will be the highest-paid player in the NHL in free agency, to you, is what?” Raycroft was asked by host Aaron Korolnek. Raycroft said that there was a 25% possibility that it would occur, and then he added, “The markets change.” With $115 million, we know that seven or eight clubs will spend that amount over the next two years, and the wage caps are going up by almost 50%.”
Raycroft thinks Marner’s chances of becoming the highest-paid hockey player will only last until Connor McDavid signs his contract extension. However, whoever these people sign will ultimately be the highest-paid player until someone else does. However, that is the great thing about the current state of NHL finances.

On December 7, 2024, Marner earned his third career hat-trick while playing for the Detroit Red Wings. On January 4, 2025, during a game against the Boston Bruins, Marner scored the game-winning goal for the 112th time in his career, matching Börje Salming for the sixth most goals by a Maple Leafs player in history and overtaking former captain Doug Gilmour.
