New Orleans Saints Face Critical Decision on Quarterback Derek Carr’s Future
Since the conclusion of the season, much debate has centered around the New Orleans Saints and their quarterback situation. Derek Carr remains under contract for two more seasons, but his hefty cap hits—exceeding $50 million each year—combined with an inconsistent tenure in New Orleans and a history of injuries have raised serious questions about his future with the franchise. The Saints are at a crossroads, and they may be prepared to explore other options at quarterback.
Complicating matters is the arrival of new head coach Kellen Moore. An offensive-minded leader, Moore is expected to have significant input in shaping the team’s quarterback plans. With New Orleans entering a fresh chapter, it remains uncertain whether Carr will be part of that transition.
While much of the focus has been on the Saints’ decision-making, Carr himself will also have considerable influence over how this situation unfolds. NFL insider Mike Garafolo recently discussed the key choices that Carr must make in the coming months, which could determine his future with the team.
Derek Carr’s Control Over His Offseason and Future with the Saints
When New Orleans signed Carr two years ago, they granted him substantial control over his contract and future, making it difficult for the team to move on if they choose to do so. As Garafolo pointed out, the veteran quarterback has significant leverage in negotiations, particularly regarding a pay cut or contract restructure. Additionally, Carr possesses a no-trade clause, meaning he has the final say on whether he would accept a move to another team.
At the conclusion of the season, Carr made it clear that he has no intention of taking a pay cut. However, he did indicate a willingness to restructure his contract. If the Saints choose this route, they must approach the restructuring carefully, ensuring it does not negatively impact their salary cap for future seasons or tie them to Carr beyond 2026.
A trade involving Carr presents another challenge. Not only would the Saints need to find a team interested in acquiring him, but it would also have to be a destination that Carr is willing to accept. Given his no-trade clause, this creates a complicated scenario, making it unlikely that a deal could materialize.
As a result, the most realistic scenarios appear to be either the Saints sticking with Carr for at least another season or deciding to move on entirely. If the team opts to part ways with him, Carr could force them to release him outright, which would leave New Orleans absorbing a significant dead cap hit.
The Saints’ Quarterback Dilemma
With all factors considered, New Orleans must carefully evaluate its options. If they retain Carr, they must ensure his contract does not become a long-term financial burden. If they move on, they must be prepared to absorb the financial repercussions of releasing him.
Ultimately, Carr’s fate in New Orleans will be determined by a combination of the Saints’ willingness to move forward with him and his own decisions regarding contract negotiations. Either way, the quarterback situation remains one of the most critical storylines for the franchise this offseason.
