The Dallas Cowboys largely avoided free agency last year, making minimal moves aside from bringing back running back Ezekiel Elliott and signing linebacker Eric Kendricks. While Kendricks proved to be a solid addition for defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, Elliott’s second stint with the team was a disappointment. Now, with a new head coach taking charge, there is speculation that the Cowboys might take a more aggressive approach in free agency to build a stronger roster. The upcoming NFL Draft in April also presents opportunities for Dallas to secure key players, particularly on offense, where they have been linked to some of the top prospects projected to go in the early rounds.
On the defensive side, however, the Cowboys could experience significant losses. Star linebacker Micah Parsons is expected to sign a contract extension this summer, but key defensive players such as Kendricks, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, and defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa are among those who could depart in free agency. Losing these players would leave Dallas with noticeable gaps to fill, making it crucial for the front office to counter these potential departures with meaningful acquisitions.
One area that demands attention is the linebacker position. Former NFL scout Bryan Broaddus has suggested that instead of focusing on re-signing their current free agents, the Cowboys should prioritize signing Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton when he becomes available.
“I want to believe that this organization is going to take a different approach in free agency this year,” Broaddus said. “And maybe not signing Osa Odighizuwa or signing Jourdan Lewis or signing Golston. But going out and signing a Nick Bolton, linebacker from Kansas City when he becomes available.”
Bolton isn’t just a recognizable name—he’s an impact player with proven success at the highest level. Entering the prime of his career, he already has two Super Bowl rings and has established himself as a key player in Steve Spagnuolo’s championship-winning defense. His 2024 season showcased his all-around skill set, as he finished with three sacks, two fumble recoveries, and 106 total tackles. For a Cowboys team with linebacker concerns, his presence would be a valuable addition.
If Kendricks does not return, Dallas will have a serious void in the middle of its defense. DeMarvion Overshown, a promising young linebacker, suffered a knee injury in December, leaving his 2025 availability uncertain. Meanwhile, Marist Liufau has flashed potential but remains relatively inexperienced. While Parsons is versatile enough to move around the defense, the Cowboys lack a reliable presence at middle linebacker. Bolton could immediately address that issue, serving as a stabilizing force next to Parsons and providing leadership in the heart of the defense.
However, Bolton’s potential arrival in Dallas ultimately depends on whether the Cowboys are willing to change their approach to free agency. If they stick to last year’s conservative spending habits, they risk missing out on high-impact players who could elevate the team. On the other hand, if the front office decides to invest in a player of Bolton’s caliber, he could become a game-changer for new head coach Matt Eberflus’ defense.
For now, Cowboys fans will have to wait and see if Jerry Jones and the front office break from their usual pattern and take an aggressive approach to free agency. With key departures looming, their decisions in the coming months will determine whether the team can build a legitimate Super Bowl contender or fall short once again.
