Pittsburgh — According to reports, Justin Fields is the frontrunner to be the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025. Russell Wilson is also involved and has initiated the discussion with the team on the next steps. However, the squad will need a backup behind both of them, and a promising candidate may return to take the position.
According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers are reducing the number of quarterbacks they are considering and prefer Fields to Wilson or any other candidate. Skylar Thompson, who was signed to a futures/reserve contract but is expected to play quarterback 3, is the team’s backup behind Fields. As the number two pick, Pittsburgh may choose an experienced alternative, which might involve Mason Rudolph making a comeback.
“They have always favored having a highly experienced No. 2 quarterback, like Fields himself, Charlie Batch, Byron Leftwich, and Mitch Trubisky. Although Kyle Allen is a valuable addition to the quarterback room, Dulac notes that in his seven-year career, he has only started four games in the last five seasons.
“… Daniel Jones, the former quarterback for the New York Giants, would be the ideal acquisition. Would the Steelers think about getting Mason Rudolph back together again? He continues.
Rudolph’s NFL record as a starter is 9-8-1, with an 8-4-1 record while he was in Pittsburgh. Before agreeing to a one-year contract with the Tennessee Titans in 2024, the former third-round selection of the Steelers played for the team for the first five years of his career. In his 1-4 season as a starter, he threw for 1,530 yards, nine touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
When he was at Pittsburgh, Rudolph was always helpful in the quarterback room. He eventually won the club over by taking over as the starting quarterback late in 2023 after replacing an injured Kenny Pickett. So much so that, even though Pickett was healthy, the Steelers retained Rudolph as the starting quarterback for their Wild Card game.
There’s little doubt that Rudolph will return to Pittsburgh, and if he wants a locker room spot with a defined job, he’ll find it with the Steelers.
