The addition of a new perimeter weapon for quarterback Jordan Love should be one of the Green Bay Packers’ summer priorities. For a number of reasons, veteran Stefon Diggs, who is about to enter free agency, would be a valuable addition to the Pack.
Are Receiver Help Needed by the Green Bay Packers?
Right now, the Packers have four good young receivers: Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Romeo Doubs, and Christian Watson. The Packers seem to have made a significant investment in providing Jordan Love with quality throwing options in addition to strong TE performance.
But the entire unit’s unreliability leaves a lot to be desired. With nine drops apiece from Wicks and Reed, who both had among the league’s seven lowest marks, Green Bay finished third overall last season. Furthermore, during their early careers, athletes like Doubs and Watson have experienced recurring injury issues.
Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, and Romeo Doubs are Green Bay Packers wide receivers.
Romeo Doubs (87), a wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers, celebrates with Christian Watson (9), Jayden Reed (11) and running back Emanuel Wilson (31) after they score a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, October 13, 2024, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
In the hierarchy, the Packers are inconsistent despite their depth. Although Watson and Doubs in particular have occasionally displayed WR1 skills, neither player is close to being on that level in the long run. Love has stated that the absence of a true 1 is not a problem, and although not all teams will have access to one of the top wideouts in the league, having a dependable, seasoned alternative would be beneficial.
The Green Bay Argument in Support of Stefon Diggs
Many Packer supporters have fantasized of making a huge deal for Seattle Seahawks sensation DK Metcalf, paying a hefty price tag for Bengals free agency Tee Higgins, or adding a veteran like Chris Godwin. Stefon Diggs, though, could be the team’s best option.

A Diggs signing appears to have a number of serious problems. He is recovering from an ACL rupture that occurred in late October, to start. This is made worse by the fact that, even if he recovers completely, his prime years are unquestionably finished at age 32. Some teams probably won’t even consider the possibility of bringing in a costly veteran with injury worries. But they shouldn’t include the Packers.
Diggs still has a lot to offer an NFL club, despite his recent negative publicity, particularly with his alleged problems with former colleague and current NFL MVP Josh Allen. The Packers don’t need Diggs to go in and be WR1 and provide 1,300 yards, even if it’s true that most wide receivers see sharp declines around the age of thirty. Diggs was a reliable WR2 even with his limited playing time last season, and the Houston Texans squad was a different club when he was hurt. Diggs got 496 yards in 8 games and was clearly a good backup to Nico Collins.
Because he spent last season in Houston with Shanahan disciple Bobby Slowik calling plays, Diggs has familiarity in a Shanahan-style system. Even if Matt LaFleur’s approach isn’t exactly the same as Slowik’s, there are certain similarities that may make it seem more appropriate for a talent like Diggs.

Why Stefon Diggs Is a Better Choice for the Packers
A player like this should be highly desired by Green Bay. Instead of burning the money to acquire a star like Higgins or shelling out a lot of draft compensation in a possible Metcalf deal, Diggs might be a shorter-term, less costly option that would help the club produce on Sundays and assist the younger receivers get their act together. If anything, GM Brian Gutekunst should be able to determine which receivers the team should truly invest in financially with the pressure of the depth chart on Watson, Doubs, Wicks, and Reed.

During a Week 1 NFL preseason game between the Green Bay Packers and the Cincinnati Bengals on Friday, August 11, 2023, at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati, Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs (87) is congratulated by Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson (9) after he scores a touchdown in the first quarter.
Diggs would be a compromise between not settling for untested talent and spending a lot of money on a wide receiver at the top of free agency lists like Higgins. In an effort to speed up the growth of players currently on their roster, the Packers can sign a dynamic player on a short-term, possibly even one-year contract. Diggs would be joining an NFC playoff club where anything is possible. Diggs would be a great addition to the team without causing long-term harm if the Packers could sign him for less than $10–11 million.
