With one game completed by each side, we are right in the thick of the 4 Nation Face-Off. Canada vs. Team USA is the main event of the second round of games, which will take place at the Bell Centre in Montreal on Saturday night at 8 p.m.
You are already aware that Don Sweeney, the general manager of the Boston Bruins, has been paying attention to Canada and carrying out the same duty. You can bet, though, that he has discussed and considered potential outcomes with his Bruins squad before the March 7 trade deadline.
Will they be standing-pat, purchasers, or sellers? That’s the dilemma, and they have three days when NHL games start to decide what to do. It may depend on how the club performs when they return. Some of the Black and Gold’s players are the subject of numerous rumors, and they must make some difficult choices.
Will Brad Marchand, the captain, be traded? What about Justin Brazeau and Trent Frederic? Is there enough interest in Charlie Coyle and Brandon Carlo to move by March 7 at 3 p.m.? Then comes the question of whether the Bruins want to keep Morgan Geekie after the 2024–25 season or whether they will move him.
The Boston Bruins must make a decision on Morgan Geekie’s future.
Geekie may be Boston’s most valuable trade piece at the deadline, aside from Marchand. He came into his own after the Bruins signed him to a two-year contract after the Seattle Kraken allowed him to depart in free agency. He will now surpass his career-high of 17 goals from the previous campaign. After the Bruins fired Jim Montgomery and hired Joe Sacco as their interim coach, he has already scored 17 points this season and is putting out a lot of work.
Thanks to Geekie and David Pastrnak, the Bruins have battled over the past month to remain within one point of the second wild-card slot in the Eastern Conference playoffs and enter the 4 Nations Face-Off. Both players have carried the squad to this far by carrying them offensively.
Does Geekie price himself out like Danton Heinen did last season, and the Bruins will lose him in free agency, or do they see a future with him in Boston? Instead of losing him for nothing as they did with Jake DeBrusk last summer, they should trade him for assets before the deadline if that’s how they feel.
For a contender seeking depth scoring and a rental, Geekie would be a great acquisition. He could complement a second power play unit and fit anywhere in the lineup.
The issue with the Bruins’ plans for Geekie is that, given his output for the Black and Gold over the past two seasons, he will receive a far larger salary increase than the $2 million he has been earning. The Bruins will have some salary space available, but there may be a gulf between them depending on how much Geekie demands and what Boston is willing to provide him. Geekie’s appearance at the deadline is quite intriguing in this regard.
