Now, let’s talk about the Phillies, Philadelphia’s other sports addiction, with catchers and pitchers reporting on Wednesday. On February 17, a few days later, the Phillies will have their first full-squad exercise.
The Phillies’ offseason has been uneventful so far, but when the mitts start popping in Clearwater, keep an eye on these spring training plotlines.
Breaking: Alec Bohm remains a Phillie
Watching Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm speak to the media in Clearwater about the hot-stove allegations that the organization supposedly marketed him to everybody and everyone might be entertaining, assuming you find awkward situations amusing.
Rob Thomson, the manager of the Phillies, claimed that the trade rumors were so frenzied that he even contacted Bohm to inform him that they were untrue. Thomson remarked, “I just wanted to let him know we’re not shopping him.” “But other teams are really interested in him because he’s a good player.”
Bohm, a high-average hitter who doesn’t pursue in a lineup of chasers, is really what the Phillies need in their lineup. The true reason Bohm is staying is that he is a bargain at $7.7 million for 2025 and won’t be a free agent until after the 2026 campaign.
The three new guys—I hope they’re not hurt—
This spring training, let’s see how the three new guys feel and, more importantly, how they look in Phillie red.
The Phils’ off-season followed a clear pattern, adding players like Max Kepler, Jordan Romano, and Jesús Luzardo who are hoping to recover from 2024’s injury-plagued campaign.
