Although it has been widely assumed that the Pittsburgh Steelers will decide whether to re-sign Justin Fields or Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback for the upcoming campaign, one NFL insider isn’t entirely certain that’s how things will turn out.
Ahead of the Super Bowl, FOX’s Jay Glazer said on NBC’s Fantasy Football Happy Hour from Radio Row that he believes Wilson will get a new start in 2025 and is unlikely to rejoin the Steelers or take a job with Pete Carroll, his former Seattle Seahawks head coach who currently holds the same title for the Las Vegas Raiders.
“I don’t think that’s gonna happen, either,” Glazer stated. “I think you’ll see a new start for Russell somewhere.”
Wilson has publicly expressed his desire to stay in Pittsburgh going ahead, but considering how poorly this past season ended, it could be difficult for the two parties to patch things up.
The 36-year-old, who inked a one-year contract in March of last year, had an outstanding debut as the team’s starter, going 6-1 in his first seven games from Weeks 7 through 14.
But after that, it was all downhill as the Steelers ended the season on a five-game losing run and there were rumors of conflict between Wilson and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.
The 13-year veteran should have no issue finding a new home in free agency because of his experience and pedigree, even though the Pittsburgh chapter of his career is over.
Glazer’s response to the question was far from definitive, although he did not entirely rule out a reunion with Fields.
“I got no idea,” said Glazer. “No, I don’t believe that… I’m not sure.”
The 25-year-old, who was acquired from the Chicago Bears in the summer, helped the Steelers stay afloat during Wilson’s absence due to a calf injury, helping them finish 4-2 through Week 6.
After Wilson recovered, Fields only played in planned packages, seeing 15 snaps overall between the regular season and the playoffs.
Although there should be plenty of choices available to him if he decides to leave, Pittsburgh has shown a desire to continue working with him as he continues to grow.
The Steelers would have to start again at the position if they are unable to keep Fields or Wilson.
To get a legitimate starter like Cam Ward of Miami or Shedeur Sanders of Colorado, they would need to advance in the NFL Draft. Unless Sam Darnold or Matthew Stafford became available, neither the trade nor free agent markets offer many desirable names.
“I don’t think they know who their starting quarterback will be yet,” Glazer stated.
It’s reasonable to say that Pittsburgh is in a difficult situation because of quarterback ambiguity.
