Despite having a brief homecoming in Vancouver, Danton Heinen is returning to a place he knows well.
Heinen, a native of the Vancouver region, signed with the Canucks as a free agent after joining the Bruins on a PTO last year. However, late on Friday, they dealt him to the Penguins.
In exchange for Marcus Pettersson and Drew O’Connor, the Canucks are sending Heinen, Vinny Desharnais, Melvin Fernstrom, and a first-round selection they acquired from the Rangers to Pittsburgh.
Last year, Heinen placed a wager on himself to sign a professional tryout contract with Boston in order to resume his career where he began. He flourished in addition to making the roster.
In 74 games with Boston in 2023–24, the 29-year-old Heinen scored 17 goals and provided 19 assists for 36 points.
Heinen was traded to Anaheim after spending his first four seasons with the Bruins. He subsequently signed with Pittsburgh, which is bringing him back to the Steel City for a second stint.
