Vikings Continue Secondary Reshuffle, Release Nahshon Wright as Bears Snag CB

As the Minnesota Vikings work through the final stages of shaping their 2025 roster, the focus remains squarely on bolstering their defensive backfield. While safety may not be a top concern, cornerback continues to be an area of interest for improvement—and recent roster moves reflect that urgency.

Late last year, the Vikings made headlines by moving on from former 2022 second-round pick Andrew Booth Jr., trading him to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for Nahshon Wright, a 2021 third-round selection. However, neither cornerback found long-term success with their new teams. Booth was released by Dallas before the end of the 2024 season, while Wright’s stint in Minnesota has now come to an end as well.

On Monday, the Vikings officially released Wright, who had joined the team in the 2024 preseason. Despite a brief tenure, he saw game action in Week 13 against the Arizona Cardinals, logging 15 snaps on special teams. His contributions in Minnesota were limited, and his time on the roster was short-lived.

Wright, a 26-year-old product of Oregon State, has now signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears just one day after his release, returning him to the NFC North. Over his four-year NFL career, Wright has appeared in 33 games—primarily with the Cowboys—registering 37 tackles, five passes defended, and a single interception. His most active seasons came between 2021 and 2022, when he made three starts for Dallas.

In the wake of Wright’s departure, the Vikings cornerback room remains in flux but features a mix of returning talent and new additions. Byron Murphy Jr., who was recently re-signed, leads the group alongside second-year man Mekhi Blackmon and special teams contributor Najee Thompson. Additionally, the team has signed a trio of free agent corners—Isaiah Rodgers, Jeff Okudah, and Tavierre Thomas—to increase competition and add veteran presence.

While the Vikings still have work to do to finalize their secondary heading into training camp, Wright’s release and the subsequent Bears signing underscore the fluid nature of NFL rosters during the offseason. For Minnesota, the emphasis remains on identifying the right blend of youth and experience in a revamped cornerback corps.
