The Minnesota Vikings lost Sam Darnold in free agency but are preparing for J.J. McCarthy’s official rookie season. However, they may still be looking to add veteran depth at quarterback, with Ryan Tannehill emerging as a potential target.
According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Vikings could sign Tannehill as an insurance policy for McCarthy. The move would provide stability and flexibility, ensuring Minnesota has an experienced option behind their young quarterback. While McCarthy has made strong progress in his development, securing a reliable backup remains crucial.
Tannehill has proven he can start if needed and could thrive under head coach Kevin O’Connell’s system, where quarterbacks have historically performed well. If he joins the Vikings, he could add his name to that list.
The former Tennessee Titans quarterback hasn’t started a game since 2023, when he competed with rookie Will Levis for the starting job. Tannehill ultimately lost that battle and has been a free agent since. Despite this, he still offers a solid skill set and experience as a former Pro Bowler.
During his time with the Titans, Tannehill played alongside top-tier talent, including wide receiver A.J. Brown and running back Derrick Henry. Under O’Connell’s offensive scheme, he would have even more dynamic weapons at his disposal.
The game is shifting towards dual-threat quarterbacks, and while Tannehill has some mobility, it’s not his biggest strength. However, he remains an accurate passer and could be a strong mentor for McCarthy.
While Minnesota has been linked to Aaron Rodgers, that possibility appears to be fading. Opting for a dependable backup like Tannehill might be the smarter move. His presence would provide security in case McCarthy isn’t fully ready, ensuring the Vikings aren’t left scrambling at the start of the season.
