Breaking News: Indiana Fever Head Coach Stephanie White Just Confirmed Top Sensational Star Player Wants To Terminate His Contract With Indiana Fever Due To…

The idea that the Indiana Fever signed Sophie Cunningham solely to protect Caitlin Clark is frustrating. However, Cunningham herself has made it clear that she will stand up for her teammates just as fiercely as she does for herself.

After spending six seasons with the Phoenix Mercury, Cunningham was traded to Indiana in early February in a multi-team deal that sent NaLyssa Smith and a draft pick to Phoenix. The move signaled the fever’s intent to compete immediately.

Cunningham brings more than just toughness—she adds valuable shooting and defensive presence. The 6-foot-1 guard averaged 8.4 points and 3.9 rebounds last season while shooting an impressive 37.8% from three-point range.

Known for her fiery demeanor and relentless energy, Cunningham has never been one to shy away from confrontation. Because of this, many WNBA fans assume Indiana acquired her primarily to shield Clark from physical play, but that isn’t the full story. Cunningham was brought in for her overall skill set, her experience playing alongside WNBA greats, and her ability to contribute on both ends of the floor. She also happens to be the kind of player who won’t tolerate any nonsense directed at her teammates.

During her introductory press conference, Cunningham confirmed her commitment to supporting Clark.

“Anything she needs from me, I’m gonna be here,” Cunningham said. “I’m a fierce competitor, I’m sassy, and I stick up for my teammates and myself. I think it’s okay to be feisty and to be yourself.”

The addition of DeWanna Bonner further strengthens the Fever’s lineup while also giving Clark another veteran ally. Bonner has previously clashed with Clark in the playoffs and has a history with Angel Reese, one of Clark’s biggest rivals.

While neither Cunningham nor Bonner was acquired just to be an “enforcer,” their presence will likely make opponents think twice before targeting Clark.
