The idea that the Indiana Fever brought in Sophie Cunningham solely to act as an enforcer for Caitlin Clark is a narrative that many dislike. However, the team’s newest addition has made it clear that she will always stand up for her teammates—just as she does for herself.
Cunningham, who spent the first six seasons of her WNBA career with the Phoenix Mercury, was traded to the Fever in early February. The deal, which sent NaLyssa Smith and a draft pick to Phoenix as part of a four-team trade, signaled Indiana’s commitment to competing immediately.
Beyond her toughness, Cunningham brings much-needed three-point shooting and defensive intensity. The 6-foot-1 guard averaged 8.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and shot an impressive 37.8% from deep last season, making her a valuable addition on both ends of the floor.
Known for her fiery personality, Cunningham has built a reputation for her tenacity and fearless approach to the game. She rarely backs down from a challenge, which has led many WNBA fans to assume that the Fever acquired her primarily to shield Clark from aggressive opponents. While that may play a role, it is far from the only reason. Indiana values Cunningham’s skill set and the experience she gained playing alongside some of the league’s best.
During her introductory press conference, Cunningham addressed the speculation, stating her commitment to supporting Clark and the team.
“Anything she needs from me, I’m going to be here. But again, I think that just the competitor that I am, I’m fierce, I’m sassy, I stick up for my teammates, I stick up for myself. Sometimes, I think that’s okay to be feisty and to be yourself.”
Additionally, the Fever’s acquisition of DeWanna Bonner will further bolster their physical presence on the court. Bonner, who had a heated playoff moment with Clark last season, now finds herself as a teammate rather than an adversary.
Bonner also has history with Angel Reese, a player who has developed an on-court rivalry with Clark, whether or not they acknowledge it.
Ultimately, both Cunningham and Bonner will bring toughness to the Fever, and while neither was acquired just to play a protective role, their presence will likely make opponents think twice before challenging Clark too aggressively.
