Saints Make a Stunning Move, Sign Chase Young to Three-Year, $51 Million Deal
The New Orleans Saints made a major splash on Monday as they dove into NFL free agency with a shocking move—securing defensive end Chase Young on a lucrative three-year, $51 million contract. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport confirmed the signing, adding that the deal could reach $57 million with incentives.
“It’s a three-year, $51 million deal with a chance to get to $57 million,” Rapoport shared. “And back at the table at 28.”
With potential bonuses, Young’s earnings in New Orleans could approach $60 million. ESPN Saints reporter Katherine Terrell provided additional context, explaining how the move helped the Saints avoid a looming salary cap hit.
“Chase Young was going to count at least $9 million against the salary cap if his contract voided on Wednesday,” Terrell shared on X. “The Saints avoid the dead money with this signing.”
A Surprising Payday for an Inconsistent Defender
Just a short time ago, Young was considered an underachiever and a potential midseason trade candidate for the second time in his career. The Detroit Lions were rumored to be interested before the trade deadline, and there was speculation about Young possibly landing with the Philadelphia Eagles after their Super Bowl LIX win. Instead, he now finds himself wealthier than ever in New Orleans.
Young’s signing has left many around the league surprised, with some believing the Saints may have overpaid for a player who has yet to consistently live up to his potential.
Saints Betting on Young’s Upside
Despite his inconsistencies, Young is coming off one of his best seasons since his standout rookie campaign with the Washington Commanders in 2020. Last season, he recorded 31 total tackles, including 21 solo stops, forced his first fumble since 2021, and notched 5.5 sacks—his second-highest single-season total.
Additionally, Young proved he can be a disruptive force behind the line of scrimmage, registering eight tackles for loss—his best mark since his Pro Bowl rookie year.
The Saints’ front office is clearly betting that Young can be a cornerstone of their pass rush moving forward, particularly as veteran Cam Jordan continues to age. Whether this gamble pays off remains to be seen, but for now, Young is set to be a major piece of the Saints’ defensive puzzle.
