Officially Vikings News: Head Coach Kevin O’Connell And General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah Just Announced The Departure Of Three Top Experienced Star Players Due To….

The Minnesota Vikings are currently evaluating their quarterback situation amid growing speculation that Sam Darnold may depart in free agency. Fortunately, the team anticipated this possibility by securing Daniel Jones and selecting J.J. McCarthy in the draft.

While some outside observers question McCarthy’s readiness for the 2025 season, the Vikings have increasingly turned their attention to Jones. According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Vikings are one of the frontrunners to land Jones in free agency.

Russini reported on March 9 that both the Vikings and the Indianapolis Colts are leading candidates to sign Jones. The 27-year-old quarterback will likely need to decide between playing under Minnesota’s head coach, Kevin O’Connell, or Indianapolis’ Shane Steichen.

The Colts have been considered a serious competitor in the pursuit of Jones. However, additional reports indicate that other teams have also shown interest in the former New York Giants signal-caller. CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones noted on March 7 that Jones has quietly generated a strong market, with a potential return to Minnesota still on the table alongside interest from Indianapolis and other teams.

Jones’ tenure with the Giants ended after two seasons of a four-year, $160 million contract, during which he accumulated $108 million in earnings. Given his financial security, he may prioritize finding the best team fit over securing the largest contract in free agency.

Vikings Shifting Focus Amid Darnold’s Likely Departure

The Vikings appear to be moving away from pursuing Darnold, as the Seattle Seahawks have emerged as the likely destination for the 2024 Pro Bowler. With Darnold seemingly out of the picture, Minnesota is exploring other quarterback options, including potentially re-signing Jones.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported on March 8 that Darnold is not expected to return to the Vikings following the Seahawks’ trade for Geno Smith. Instead, Minnesota has been actively considering alternative quarterback options, with Jones being a primary target. The quarterback is currently weighing multiple offers.

Kevin O’Connell’s Perspective on Jones

Minnesota head coach Kevin O’Connell has spoken positively about Jones, highlighting the quarterback’s potential. Reflecting on Jones’ performance with the Vikings, O’Connell emphasized the impressive throws he made during practice, whether on the scout team or while working with key receivers like Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison.

O’Connell noted that Jones possesses notable physical attributes, describing him as a big, strong, and athletic player. The coach also compared Jones to Darnold, acknowledging similar upside in both players. He expressed optimism that Jones could continue developing within the Vikings’ system.

When Jones first joined Minnesota, O’Connell allowed him time to adjust before fully integrating into the team. The head coach’s approach, combined with praise from Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, may have helped establish a foundation for Jones’ potential return to the team.

As the free agency period unfolds, the Vikings remain a strong contender to re-sign Jones, though they face competition from the Colts and other suitors. The decision ultimately rests with Jones, who must weigh his options carefully before making his next move.
