As spring training progresses, teams begin shifting their focus toward getting more at-bats and innings for regular players and those on the brink of making the major league roster. As a result, players who are still a bit further from the majors start being reassigned to minor league camp. Today, the Phillies made some of those expected roster cuts.
There were no real surprises among the moves, especially in positions like catcher and relief pitcher, where innings need to be covered as starters build up their workload. Among the most notable names reassigned were Aidan Miller and Justin Crawford, two of the organization’s top prospects. Their time in big league camp was valuable, offering them a glimpse of the competition level they’ll face when they eventually reach the majors.
Both Miller and Crawford had some impressive moments during camp and in-game action, but it was evident that they still need further development in the minor leagues. Facing major league-caliber pitching—both the velocity and the advanced breaking pitches—provided them with a clear sense of what awaits them in Philadelphia.
While they aren’t quite ready yet, they’re getting close, and the Phillies have plenty of reasons to be excited about their potential. Their time in camp should serve as a crucial stepping stone in their development as they continue working toward their big-league debuts.
