The Atlanta Braves’ spring training has given them a quick look at the talent on their roster ahead of the 2025 Major League Baseball season, which begins in just one month. Who will start as the fourth and fifth starters and how the bullpen will look are the two biggest unknowns going into the season.
To assess who is most prepared to be on the Opening Day roster, there is a great deal of pitching depth. Some of the team’s young pitchers have already been cut from the roster. Experience will be a key asset to the company because the field of pitchers is limited.
After some lackluster performances, the Braves sent veteran reliever Wander Suero back to minor league camp.
RHP Wander Suero was sent to minor league camp after Atlanta announced another spring roster cut on Thursday. As a result, there were 53 players on the MLB spring roster.
Suero had two appearances this spring after signing a minor league contract with the Braves in December. He had two runs on four hits and a 9.00 ERA, so it wasn’t pretty.
He has the same appearance as he did during his final two Major League seasons, with the Dodgers in 2023 and the Nationals in 2021. In 2024, he played one game for the Astros and recorded one out. He pitched 42.2 innings with 15 BB and 44 K in 2021, recording a 6.33 ERA. He pitched eight innings in 2023 with the Dodgers, recording a 7.88 ERA with five walks and nine strikeouts.
Following a 6.08 ERA over 23.2 innings, Suero was dismissed from the Angels minor league system in the summer of 2022. He had a 2.66 ERA over 67.2 innings with 33 BB and 71 K while pitching for Houston’s Triple-A club last season.
He found some success, but the high amount of walks isn’t encouraging. There must be something the Braves still see in Suero since they didn’t immediately release him. He’ll clearly have a position in the minor league system unless things go drastically wrong.
