Several of the Houston Astros’ best players, including Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman, have found new homes this offseason. However, Lance McCullers Jr. seems to be getting closer to rejoining the ‘Stros at the mound, so they could be getting a familiar face back in their rotation. It was announced on Thursday that McCullers will make a significant move in the direction of going back to the hill.
Due to a number of throwing arm ailments, McCullers has not thrown since 2022. If nothing else goes wrong with injuries, McCullers should be able to pitch for Houston even if he isn’t anticipated to be ready for Opening Day. As he gets closer to making a comeback for the Astros, McCullers will host his first live batting practice session on Saturday.
Brian McTaggart of MLB.com wrote on X, previously Twitter, that Lance McCullers Jr. would host his first live batting practice of the spring on Saturday in West Palm Beach.

McCullers has suffered with injuries throughout of his career; following Tommy John surgery, he missed the whole 2019 season. McCullers has the potential to be Houston’s preferred starter when healthy. In 2017, he was selected as an All-Star, and in 2021, he placed sixth in the American League Cy Young competition.
Expectations won’t be particularly high for McCullers given the length of time he’s lost, but if everything goes well, the Astros will have a vital member of their rotation back for the 2025 season. As McCullers continues to increase his workload, it will be important to monitor his progress, but for the time being, he seems to be headed in the right direction.
