In the last year of his $65.41 million, six-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Mitch Marner is expected to enter free agency.
Though he stayed and has become Toronto’s greatest player, Marner was the target of trade speculations last summer.
Now that Marner is in the last year of his contract, TSN NHL expert Bob McKenzie stated that every indication suggests the winger will be heading out on the free market.
“You have to keep working hard if you don’t perform well in the playoffs because players like Marner are hard to find. On The Quiz on TSN, McKenzie stated, “I would try to sign him, even though I know Leafs fans don’t like to hear that.” “I don’t think that will happen; I believe the Leafs are aware that he’s far more likely to enter free agency. Do I believe they will try, though? Of course.
Marner may be the best free agent available if he decides to enter free agency. Marner has skated in 56 games, scoring 71 points with 16 goals and 55 assists.
An Insider Describes Marner’s Propensity to Hit the Open Market
Darren Dreger, another TSN NHL expert, concurs that Marner will probably go on the free market following McKenzie’s remark.
According to Dreger, Darren Ferris, Marner’s agent, is a skilled negotiator who frequently takes his clients to the open market to determine their actual worth.
Dreger stated on First Up, “Look, Brad Treliving as GM doesn’t have to play by the rules of Darren Ferris, the agent.” He can go straight to Ferris and say, ‘I need an answer.'” He can also go straight to Mitch. Negotiations are necessary. I’ve been waiting extremely patiently, and we wanted Marner to concentrate on playing, so we didn’t want to bother him. He has had a really difficult year.
“The GM can exert pressure on the player or the agent, but I don’t think you’ll know before March 7th. Dreger came to the conclusion that Feris would benefit most by allowing these elite players to enter free agency and obtaining an objective assessment of the market’s dynamics.
Marner helped Canada win the 4 Nations Face-Off and was named a three-time NHL All-Star.
Marner of the Maple Leafs said that four countries helped him gain confidence.
Throughout his career, Marner has been criticized for his postseason play, particularly in Game 6 and Game 7.
However, Marner scored the overtime victory against Sweden, demonstrating his strong play in the 4 Nations event. In order to win the tournament, he also set up the game-winning shot in overtime, which he said will boost his confidence heading into the postseason.
“Belief. In a sense, belief as well,” Marner added. “I’ll attempt to handle this for the remainder of the season and beyond.”
Jon Cooper, the coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Team Canada, also believes that Marner makes a difference on the ice.
Cooper remarked, “That kid can make plays.” “He only needed one opportunity to play, and he did.”
In 2015, Marner was chosen fourth overall in the NHL draft.
