Charlie McAvoy of the Boston Bruins will not play in Thursday night’s 4 Nations Face-Off Championship Game against Team USA and Team Canada at the TD Garden. Later on Monday evening, it was announced that he had been admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital.
It turns out that McAvoy will be sidelined for a long time due to an illness that necessitated surgery. According to reports, the Bruins front office is not pleased with the course of events that resulted in the hospitalization of their top defenseman. The Boston front staff was “extremely unhappy” with the way things turned out, according to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.
The Bruins are said to be pleased with how Team USA handled Charlie McAvoy’s injury.
“I think the people who are the angriest are the team, the Bruins,” Friedman stated. “They express their dissatisfaction with the way this all transpired and their belief that their player was not treated fairly if you read their statement from today. McAvoy appears to have sustained his injury in the first game against Finland. Joel Armia throws him hard against the post in one of the plays.
Additionally, it seems as though he may have received a shot or something. Though I’m not really sure what occurred, it appears like he played on Saturday with a far more serious injury than everyone first thought, which just serves to highlight how amazing his performance was.”
McAvoy was the best defenseman on the court for coach Mike Sullivan, who also happens to be his father-in-law, during Team USA’s 3-1 victory over Canada on Saturday night at the Bell Centre in Montreal. But after the game, when the squad returned to Boston, things immediately went wrong, resulting in surgery and a hospital stay. The Bruins then announced McAvoy will not play on Thursday night, rather than Team USA.
“On Tuesday, when the Bruins, not Team USA, made the announcement that McAvoy would not be playing, some people asked, ‘Why are the Bruins, whose general manager is also the general manager of Team Canada, announcing that Charlie McAvoy won’t play?'” “Friedman said.” “And then it became pretty clear that it’s because the Bruins were extremely unhappy with the way this had been handled and that they felt that in this particular case, McAvoy didn’t get the proper care.”
The Bruins have every right to be angry, but let’s not forget who Team USA’s team physicians and medical personnel are. The Bruins had a problem with the Minnesota Wild’s medical staff last season because of the documents they were provided after acquiring Pat Maroon at the deadline, who was then battling ailments.
McAvoy has been suffering with injuries lately; he missed a lot of time in January and early February due to an injury, but he made a quick comeback and scored goals in his first two games back against the Minnesota Wild and the New York Rangers. The emphasis now shifts to his well-being and a secure recuperation.
