When the New York Mets signed outfielder Juan Soto to a record-breaking 15-year, $765 million contract, it was the biggest offseason splash.
As Soto begins his spring training in Port St. Lucie, Florida, it is becoming increasingly apparent that the left-handed slugger will remain in Queens for the foreseeable future.
The 26-year-old engaged in media interviews following his exercises for the first time since his debut news conference on December 12. Throughout his interview with reporters, the four-time All-Star discussed a number of subjects.
However, one aspect that stood out was how he handled pressure. The largest media market for baseball is New York. Expectations are substantially greater in 2025 after the Mets missed out on winning the 2024 World Series by two victories.
This is particularly true after spending so much money on Soto. Soto was informed by a reporter that New York has been called a “Mets town” and that such a claim infuriates New York Yankees supporters.
The slugger was questioned about how the squad can deal with “the hate” and keep the pressure from increasing. SNY’s X account caught Soto’s straightforward reaction.
“Winning games,” he remarked.
And that’s all you have to do,” he added. You don’t need to speak for too long. You simply must get out there and complete the task. He has a lot of experience climbing the baseball mountain.
Soto helped the Yankees make it to the Fall Classic last season for the first time since 2009 and won the 2019 World Series with the Washington Nationals.
With a.989 OPS, 41 home runs, 31 doubles, 109 RBI, and 128 runs scored in 713 plate appearances, he played a crucial role in the Bombers’ victory. His next challenge is to assist the Mets in winning the organization’s first World Series since 1986 and making their first World Series appearance since 2015.
