The Philadelphia Phillies did just that this summer. Normally, contending organizations aren’t in the business of attempting to deal away young, rising players who have several years of club control left.
Alec Bohm, who was just selected for his first All-Star selection in his career, was shopped by the front management in an attempt to bolster a squad and lineup that had disappointed over the previous two years.
Nothing materialized.
Bohm is still highly valued by the Phillies, and when teams asked if they might trade him, they demanded a huge haul in exchange, which kept him on the club.
However, why was Philadelphia seeking a trading partner in the first place?
According to an explosive revelation, coaches, players, and executives were getting weary of Bohm’s juvenile attitude throughout his career, despite the organization’s insistence that it had everything to do with trying every possible way to improve.
That was once more evident during the postseason, when he appeared mentally exhausted and made a number of poor decisions and mistakes in the field in addition to his dismal plate performance.
Following his finest performance of his career, many are curious to see how Bohm would respond to his name being linked to several trade speculations. However, Thomson provided a positive report before Spring Training.
He spent a lot of time [this week] surrounded by coaches. He’s so upbeat, they said. He looks like a different person. Once more, he has matured. He’s grown up so much since we first brought him to the big leagues. It appears like he’s taken another step. According to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, the captain stated, “I’m really excited to see what he can do.”
That’s certainly a nice thing to hear.
But, the cynic also needs to point out that Thomson very much as to make that sort of comment, even if he’s regarded to be a pretty straight shooter.
Bohm will be the Phillies’ starting third baseman in 2025, barring an unexpected blockbuster, and the manager is making every effort to ease tensions before the club begins its lengthy season.
It is hoped that Bohm, who is currently 28 years old, will be mature enough to manage the highs and lows of a Major League season.
Last season, it appeared as though he made progress, but he didn’t.
This year, Thomson seemed to believe he will finally make it to the last stage of being a professional baseball player.
If that’s true and Bohm plays well, he may play a major role in Philadelphia’s third World Series victory.
