I felt that many of us were discussing the incorrect aspect of what Jay Glazer stated when he tossed a log on the fire of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offseason quarterback debate last week.
What most people were interested in was Glazer’s statement (during the “Fantasy Football Happy Hour”) that it is unlikely that Russell Wilson will return to Pittsburgh or visit Las Vegas in 2025.
Regarding Wilson’s trip to Las Vegas, Glazer stated, “That ain’t gonna happen.” “That one is finished. Nor do I believe that (a return to Pittsburgh) will occur. I believe Russell will have a fresh start someplace.
Definitely noteworthy. What caught my attention, though, was Glazer’s subsequent response when he was questioned about Pittsburgh’s starting lineup for the next season.
“I’m not sure. I don’t believe I “I’m not sure,” Glazer said. The other day, Mike Tomlin and I exchanged texts. The Senior Bowl is where he is. They are limited in how much they can compartmentalize. Then, suddenly, they have meetings for the Combine the following week. They must thus begin discussing free agency and other issues. However, I don’t believe they have decided on their starting quarterback as of yet.
I suppose Glazer would have been forthright with any indication that they might have had discussions that were moving forward with keeping Justin Fields if he had been messaging Tomlin and believed it was unlikely that he would be able to keep Wilson.
The dominant view in Pittsburgh appears to be that the Steelers’ summer quarterback dilemma will most likely be resolved by starting Fields in 2025, whether they like it or not. Glazer, however, seemed to have no evidence to support such an assumption.
I find it intriguing because if the Steelers were genuinely committed to making Fields their starter, I would assume that a contract with him would be rather simple to complete.
However, Fields might not want that. Perhaps he wants to check if there’s a better option available. More economical. More stable. Regarding the supporting cast,. or mentoring. or an opportunity to win.
Adam Schefter of ESPN gave that idea some legitimacy before the Super Bowl.
Russell has been contacted by them. They will speak with Justin Fields, but there will be a market for him, with other clubs interested. We’ll see if Pittsburgh is part of that market in the future, Schefter stated.
Schefter appeared to believe that a reunion between Wilson and Glazer was feasible in Pittsburgh, which is where his account diverged from Glazer’s.
Schefter stated, “Returning is a possibility, even though many have speculated that it’s not likely.” Russell Wilson and the organization have been in constant communication regarding future plans. Obviously, it doesn’t imply things won’t work out. Although he is about to become a free agent, Russell Wilson, like Justin Fields, is still open to returning to Pittsburgh.
When there is a clear opportunity for Fields to be a full-time No. 1 here on a club that made the playoffs the previous season, what would it say if the Steelers want him to be their starter but he would rather go elsewhere?
What would it imply if Fields chose to join the Raiders, who are always rebuilding? Or any of New York’s often-failing teams? Or, if they move on from Derek Carr, another last-place location like New Orleans, Tennessee, or Cleveland.
Let me respond to my own query. It would most likely indicate that he has little faith in Pittsburgh’s system. Because he has no faith in his weaponry or offensive strategy. It most likely indicates that he doesn’t think the Steelers will trust him to be the starting quarterback even if he has a few poor games or to allow him the freedom to switch plays at the line of scrimmage.
