The offensive coordinator of the K-State Wildcats has made a shift, and the team’s top quarterback is thrilled with it.
Matt Wells is now the full-time offensive coordinator for the Wildcats. He served as associate head coach, quarterbacks coach, and co-offensive coordinator during the previous season. If you were to ask anyone who enjoys moving, Avery Johnson would say he does.
Johnson led the Wildcats to their third consecutive nine-win season after replacing quarterback Will Howard, who won a national title. The rising star quarterback has an opportunity to develop into an all-around player with Wells directing players.
Johnson’s sprinting prowess and legs are well-known. In addition to throwing for 2712 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, the sophomore ran for 605 yards and seven scores. Good numbers for a sophomore, but this season the Wildcats are hoping to make the playoffs.
His erratic arm was the problem the previous season. His decision-making was generally subpar, and his completion rate was below 60 (58.3). But it doesn’t mean he can’t solve it. In his finest game of the seas against West Virginia, he demonstrated his abilities. In addition to three throwing touchdowns and a QBR of 96.4, he was two yards short of his first 300-yard performance.
The Wildcats have an opportunity to challenge for the Big 12 championship if he can regularly achieve those heights with Wells directing plays.
