The 25-year-old starter-turned-backup Justin Fields is another prospective free-agent quarterback that the Steelers may be interested in bringing back after a wild 2024 season in Pittsburgh, according to ESPN source Adam Schefter.
“Russell Wilson could still return to Pittsburgh, just like Justin Fields, the other (Steelers) quarterback,” Schefter stated on Sunday morning’s NFL Countdown in advance of Super Bowl LIX. The Steelers have stated unequivocally that they want to re-sign one of those two quarterbacks. Russell has been contacted. Although there will be a market for Justin Fields, they will be speaking with him. We’ll see whether Pittsburgh is one of the many clubs who are interested in him in the future.
The Steelers have a big quarterback dilemma going into the 2025 offseason.
Wilson signed a one-year contract with the Steelers after being released by the Denver Broncos, while Fields was acquired from the Chicago Bears last summer. Prior to the regular season, Wilson was selected as the starting quarterback over Fields by longtime Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin; however, Wilson missed the first six games due to a calf injury. After leading Pittsburgh to a 4-2 record, Fields was replaced by Wilson, who helped the Steelers win six of his first seven games for a 10-3 record and the top spot in the AFC North.
However, Pittsburgh had to travel as a Wild Card to play the rival Baltimore Ravens, who won the division for the second straight year, after a four-game losing skid to conclude the regular season. The Steelers would lose their sixth straight postseason game, going all the way back to 2016.
The five consecutive losses had one thing in common: Pittsburgh had trouble scoring, never scoring more than 17 points in any of those games. Wilson, 36, had a 63.7% passing percentage at the end of his 13th NFL season, throwing for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions. Fields, 25, had a 65.8% completion rate while passing for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception. Five rushing scores were added by him.

Art Rooney II, the owner and president of the Pittsburgh Steelers, stated on Monday that he “would prefer” to sign Justin Fields or Russell Wilson this summer.
According to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, Rooney stated, “I would prefer to sign one of them because they are both competent quarterbacks.” That will thus take precedence, and I believe it will present us with the best chance to proceed. … There are unfilled positions in the quarterback room, which we need to fill. That must be the top priority, because I wouldn’t be shocked if we looked at the Draft as well this year or next.
It’s “probably unlikely,” Rooney continued, that the Steelers would re-sign both quarterbacks in 2025.
