Earlier this week, it looked like the $200 million Alex Bregman sweepstakes would be over, but it’s now thought that the star infielder won’t sign a contract for another week or two.
The five teams reportedly still vying for the great third baseman are the Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, and Houston Astros.
After general manager Dana Brown gave the impression that Bregman was a goner, Houston was unlikely, but things might have altered drastically in a short period of time.
Recently, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale disclosed a Bregman sweepstakes tidbit that would keep the door open for a deal with the Astros. “Free agent third baseman Alex Bregman still has no interest in a short-term contract and seeks a 6- or 7-year deal,” Nightengale said. One of the few clubs in the sweepstakes that appears poised to make an offer of a six- or seven-year contract is the Astros.
If Nightengale’s claim is true, the Cubs are allegedly prepared to offer the infielder a two- or three-year contract, which may be terrible news for Chicago.
The Cubs might not be in the race until they are prepared to provide him a contract that is more in line with the length he is requesting. It’s difficult to rule out the Red Sox and Blue Jays landing Bregman in a long-term contract since they have the financial means to do so. Following closely after, the Tigers are reportedly prepared to shell out a substantial sum of money—possibly as much as six years’ worth—to acquire the star and bring him to Detroit. In any case, Astros supporters should be encouraged by Nightengale’s claim that Bregman will return home.
