One of the best free agents still available this winter is Alex Bregman. After players like Anthony Santander and Juan Soto signed their contracts, the New York Mets’ Bregman and Pete Alonso are the obvious top players remaining.
This winter, Bregman’s free agency sweepstakes has been an absolute roller coaster. At the start of the offseason, he appeared to be in the running to return to the Houston Astros, but the two parties were unable to reach an agreement.
A few more teams have been given the opportunity to enter the Bregman sweepstakes in light of this. The Astros, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, and Detroit Tigers are the only five teams who are probably still in the running for the Bregman sweepstakes.
Bregman is most likely to be acquired by the Astros. The Astros appear to want him back, and he appears to want to go back to Houston. Bregman probably would have signed with another team by now if he had planned to do so.
The Red Sox are wealthy enough to offer the talented third baseman a big contract, but they don’t appear to want to spend almost $200 million.
The Blue Jays, who signed a couple more players this winter through free agency, can say the same thing. There is no reason to think Detroit would take the star from Houston, even if the Tigers were the clear favorite in this contest for a time. This is because the discussions are allegedly at a standstill.
The Tigers would have made an offer by now if they were going to surpass the Astros’ rumored $156 million offer. Due to their recent rise as a suitor, the Cubs are the dark horse in this race. In only a few changes, Chicago has transformed their team from a possible laughing joke to a legitimate contender in the National League. A good offseason would be topped off by the addition of Bregman, although at a high cost.
