The Philadelphia Eagles were one of the weakest secondaries in the league throughout the 2010s before Darius Slay joined the team.
But since they acquired the Pro Bowl player from the Detroit Lions, Slay’s influence has been seen from the start. Due in large part to Slay’s performance as a lockdown cornerback, Philadelphia has finished in the top 10 in pass defense for three of the past four seasons.
The 34-year-old cornerback is aware that Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders might be his final with the squad as they get ready for the conference title game.
Slay stated that he is “preparing” for Sunday’s NFC Championship Game, which will be his last home game wearing an Eagles uniform, according to Ashlyn Sullivan of NBC Sports Philadelphia.
Slay went on to say that although he “understands it most likely won’t be with the Eagles,” he is “85 percent” inclined to play one more season.
There are several young corners in Philadelphia that might take Slay’s place. Isaiah Rodgers and Kelee Ringo can be considered as replacements for the Pro Bowl player. Slay’s designation as a post-June 1 cut or trade would allow the Eagles to save $4.324 million in 2025 in cap savings, while a pre-June 1 cut or trade would result in $22.75 million in dead cap and a $8.97 million hit against the cap.
In other words, following the conclusion of the season, Philadelphia is anticipated to make an effort to get younger.
