Although there are many ways for the Detroit Lions to defeat teams, it has been a long time since anyone has said that their defense is strong enough to win a game on its own. They demonstrated that on Sunday. The Lions had to work hard to win against the Indianapolis Colts after building up their offensive against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite having fewer players both before and during the game, Detroit dominated a 24-6 victory and did not allow a touchdown for the second consecutive game. For the first time since 1999, the team has gone two games without giving up a score.
“First, I would emphasize our defense,” Campbell stated. “I mean, we haven’t given up a touchdown in the second half of the last three games, and this is nine quarters without giving up one. We frequently discuss closing down the run, playing (a) physical approach, and limiting points. We succeeded in doing so. We were certain that Jonathan Taylor would be the one we had to stop. That’s what we did. They got us on a couple of the quarterback runs, but overall we met our needs and kept them out of the game.”
The Detroit Lions can beat teams a multitude of ways, but it’s been a while since anyone could proclaim their defense was good enough to win a game by themselves. On Sunday, they proved that to be true.
After piling up the offense against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Lions went back on the road and had to grind out a win against the Indianapolis Colts. Though they were shorthanded, going into and during the game, Detroit did not yield a touchdown for the second straight game as part of dominating a 24-6 victory. It’s the first time since 1999 the franchise has not allowed a touchdown in consecutive games.
