John Sterling may return to provide commentary for the New York Yankees’ playoff run. Reports from Andrew Marchand of The Athletic suggest that the beloved announcer could come back as the Yankees’ radio voice for the postseason. Sterling plans to discuss this possibility with Chris Oliviero, an executive at WFAN’s parent company, Audacy.
“The ball is in their court,” Sterling said, adding that he would feel for those who have been covering the games all season.
At 86, Sterling stepped down as the primary announcer in April, ending a 36-year career. Since then, various broadcasters, including Emmanuel Berbari, Rickie Ricardo, and Justin Shackil, have joined color commentator Suzyn Waldman, with special guests like Meredith Marakovits and Brandon Tierney also filling in as the Yankees (75-53) approach the postseason.
Marchand noted that Sterling’s willingness to cover both home and away playoff games could impact his potential return, as he had previously reduced travel due to its demands. Recently, Sterling made a brief return to the WFAN booth during a game against the Cleveland Guardians. Even with his diminished role, he remains a familiar voice in the Bronx, with his signature call still played at Yankee Stadium after victories.
