Jerry Jones Says Dalvin Cook Likely Won’t Play in Week 5
Dalvin Cook has not yet been promoted from the practice squad, where he joined in late Augus
As the Dallas Cowboys prepare for their Week 5 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jerry Jones provided an update on Dalvin Cook’s status. When asked about Cook potentially making his debut, Jones stated on 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM) that it “probably” won’t happen this week. Cook mentioned he feels ready and is doing all he can to be elevated from the practice squad. Jones emphasized that there are no obstacles preventing Cook from taking the field.
“When assessing a roster, you need to consider the entire lineup and make adjustments for injuries or player availability. That’s crucial, along with determining how you plan to utilize each player,” Jones explained. “Recently, we didn’t run the ball much at all, so you have to evaluate each position accordingly, whether it’s for him, the receivers, or anyone else.”
The Cowboys have chosen a running back-by-committee strategy at the beginning of the season, mainly distributing carries among Rico Dowdle, Ezekiel Elliott, and Deuce Vaughn. Fullback Hunter Luepke has also contributed with key receptions in recent weeks.
Russell Wilson’s calf is improving, but the Steelers are preparing for Justin Fields to start against the Cowboys.
“When evaluating a roster, you need to consider the whole team and make adjustments for injuries and player availability. This is crucial, especially in how you plan to utilize each player,” Jones said. “The other day, we hardly ran the ball at all. You need to assess every position, whether it’s his, the receivers, or others.”
The Cowboys have adopted a running back-by-committee strategy to start the season, mainly using Rico Dowdle, Ezekiel Elliott, and Deuce Vaughn for carries. Fullback Hunter Luepke has also become a part of the rotation with some important catches recently.
Cook has not yet been promoted from the practice squad, which he joined in late August.
“It’s part of my current situation,” Cook said Monday. “For me, it’s about improving and being ready, knowing we’ll be in meaningful games ahead. I understand how this league operates; it’s a long season, so I just need to stay prepared.”
