In their final preseason game, the Pittsburgh Steelers fell to the Detroit Lions 24-17, with both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields leading touchdown drives. However, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has yet to name his starting quarterback for the upcoming season.

Despite the loss, Wilson and Fields each showcased their abilities. Wilson, who has been considered the frontrunner for the starting role, completed both of his pass attempts, including a 32-yard connection with George Pickens. This set up a 31-yard touchdown run by Cordarrelle Patterson to cap off the opening drive. Wilson was then benched for the remainder of the game, giving Fields three drives to prove himself.

Fields had a mixed performance, converting a third down with a run and completing a 22-yard pass to MyCole Pruitt, which led to La’Mical Perine’s 1-yard touchdown run. However, his second drive ended with a fumble and sack, and his third drive also concluded with a sack.

Tomlin, who praised Wilson’s strong finish in the game, has not yet made a final decision on the starting quarterback and stated that a decision will be made at the end of their work week. Detroit coach Dan Campbell expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, highlighting their strong finish despite a shaky start. Jermar Jefferson scored two touchdowns for the Lions, including the game-winning 7-yard run in the fourth quarter.
