WAFF – SHEFFIELD, Ala. There is a new head coach for the Sheffield High School Varsity Baseball team.
Officials from Sheffield City Schools revealed Omar Tompkins as the Bulldogs’ new head coach on Monday.
Carlos Nelson, the superintendent of Sheffield City Schools, stated, “We felt like he fit the bill as someone who would be committed to Sheffield and help grow the program and keep it moving forward.” Nelson cited his own experience as a college baseball player and his work as an assistant coach for two outstanding baseball programs.
At Russellville High School, Tompkins most recently held the positions of strength and conditioning coach and assistant varsity baseball coach. He had been Florence High School’s assistant coach before to that.
It will be his first head coaching role at Sheffield.
“I don’t really care about the title because ball is ball, head coach or assistant,” Tompkins remarked. “All of us are going to collaborate. Ultimately, the objective is to develop these young athletes into future versions of myself so they are prepared for life after baseball. But in the interim, I envision and anticipate this team to finish in the top two in the region as they develop into responsible young men and leaders.
The native of Russellville is a graduate of Lane College, where he played baseball as a team captain and earned a degree in physical education with a biology minor.
He’ll take over as coach right away.
